Can you cook king prawns, from frozen? 

Frozen king prawns should not be cooked directly from the freezer, as it can cause them to overcook easily. Instead, you will need to safely defrost before cooking:

  • Soak the frozen king prawns in salt water for about 20 minutes, making sure that they are fully submerged. Once defrosted, drain the water off and do not refreeze before cooking. 
  • You can thaw the frozen king prawns under running water by placing them in a sieve or strainer. Make sure that the water is cool and not warm as this will start to cook the prawns. This method normally takes about 5-10 minutes, and do not refreeze before cooking 
  • You can also place the frozen king prawns in a fridge overnight. Once they are defrosted the next day, they will be ready to cook. 

Once defrosted, there are several ways to cook your king prawns. You can boil your prawns in salted water for about 3-6 minutes, you can butterfly and grill the prawns, or you can sauté them in a pan before adding them to your recipe. Once the prawns are pink and firm, they are ready to eat.
